Britain War Defences of 1940
A contemporary art exhibition exploring the ‘Concrete Castles’, the forgotten pillboxes scattered across Britain’s coastlines. The exhibition rediscovers these Second World War defence structures, hastily built in 1940 under the threat of German invasion, many of which now lie forgotten and crumbling into the landscape.
The Royal Engineers have a long history of fortifications, from their earliest days in the Board of Ordnance, to more recent works in Afghanistan. The exhibition displays just a few of the plans and photographs of the Royal Engineers, which are usually housed in the Museum archives.
